Baha Yetkin and Alexandros Koustas, experts in traditional Ottoman court music, grace Leighton House audiences with the rich sounds of the beautiful Turkish Makam, found throughout folk and dance music; in court audiences as well as Mevlevi ceremonies. All to be found in one of the most beautiful buildings in London and a perfect representation of Victorian Orientalism.
The Musicians will provide contextual information and answer questions from the floor.
Alexandros Koustas, the Klasik Kemençe
Alexandros studied the violin and the viola at the Royal Academy of Music. He is the principal violist of the English National Ballet Philharmonic and was recently appointed as a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Alexandros played the Kemençe in ENBs’ new production of Akram Khan’s Giselle with the ENB Philharmonic, in London and on tour.
Baha Yetkin, the Oud
Baha Yetkin began his musical career in 2000 at Bogazici Turkish Music Foundation Conservatory. His teachers include the world famous oud players Mehmet Emin Bitmez, Yurdal Tokcan and Necati Çelik. He is the only Turkish style oud teacher and Turkish Classical Music Makam teacher in London and is keen to share his knowledge with a wider audience.
